Why bird protection glass is becoming increasingly important
The combination of properties found in modern architectural glass makes it a sought-after building material that’s fit for the future. With its highly effective coatings, this type of glass helps to save a lot of energy in both summer and winter. At the same time, it allows plenty of daylight through and doesn’t impede the view of building users. For buildings with large windows or glass façades in particular, bird protection is another important factor to consider.
Birds perceive their surroundings differently than we humans. Their eyes have a lower image resolution, and they can also recognise colours in a more differentiated way than we do. This makes them perfectly adapted to their natural surroundings – but it’s a different story in residential areas. For instance, birds often fail to recognise glass as a barrier – either because it is too transparent for them to perceive or because it reflects their surroundings like a mirror image. But now, there is a solution in the form of the specially developed bird protection glass from Glas Trösch.
What makes bird-friendly glass
We’ve all seen those black silhouettes of birds of prey stuck onto windows – as well as being unsightly, they are virtually ineffective. The reality is that windows need special markings for effective bird protection. Numerous tests in recent years have indicated the requirements that need to be met.
The anti-bird strike marking should take up at least 15% of the glass surface and be distributed over the entire surface area. Depending on the contrast, this figure may also be slightly higher or lower. Birds fly through dense branches and tiny gaps. The distance between the markings should therefore be no greater than the palm of the hand.
Satin finish
The pattern is applied to the glass by etching. These patterns, which were specially developed by Glas Trösch, have been extensively tested by the American Bird Conservancy and classified as effective. Other patterns are available on request.
Functionality: Extremely robust anti-bird strike glass; also available as a half strip size
Aesthetics: Subtle patterns that barely diminish the appearance; individual patterns possible
Areas of application: Particularly advantageous for large glass surfaces

Printed
In this BIRDPROTECT variant, the glass is printed with translucent colours that make the panes more visible to birds. In principle, a free choice of pattern is possible as long as the criteria for anti-bird strike patterns are met.
Functionality: Anti-bird strike glass that is as effective as it is versatile
Aesthetics: Free choice of pattern for an individual finish; logo printing also possible
Areas of application: Can be used for all glass applications
PVB film
The special PVB film has integrated shimmering particles. These create a sparkling effect that stops birds from flying into the glass. The shimmering particles are barely visible and therefore have little impact on the transparency and aesthetics of the glazing.
Functionality: Effective bird protection glass designed as laminated safety glass
Aesthetics: Discreet markings for minimal visual impact; 3D shimmering particles create a subtle sparkle
Areas of application: Particularly suitable for applications where a laminated safety glass is required or desired
