Cooperative housing in a former hospital

| Glas Trösch | Reference

Rapp AG and Müller Sigrist Architekten have converted the old Felix Platter hospital in Basel into a light-flooded residential complex.

Commissioned by the housing association "Wohnen und mehr" the conversion posed a number of challenges for the architects – not least because one of their goals was to preserve the iconic 1960s building's appearance. This was achieved through a gentle, material-optimised renovation that left the ornate façade with its intricate window details unchanged while inserting additional glazing at the rear. To accomplish the latest insulation standards, the architects added set-back loggias to the apartments. For these, our thermal insulation coating SILVERSTAR EN2plus was used as triple glazing with sound insulation foil. This combination achieves a very low heat transfer coefficient, which provides effective solar protection in summer and ensures comfortable indoor temperatures and low energy costs all year round - while at the same time guaranteeing state-of-the-art sound insulation.
